Submitting Web Pages

After your optimized pages have been uploaded to your web site, the next step is to submit them to the search engines using the Submitter feature in WebPosition. We recommend submitting a URL to search engines whenever the content of the page has been changed. This will encourage the engines to assign the page a new ranking based on the new content.

After submitting, it will take anywhere from one to eight weeks for your pages to be added to the search engine database(s), and for your ranking to change. The amount of time varies for each search engine. The submission report generated after you submit will give you estimated times for each engine so you know what to expect. During this period, run the Reporter and watch the URL Verification report to see when you become indexed. Monitor the Engine Summary report to see when your rankings improve.

Note that some engines (like MSN), cannot be added to our auto submitter because they require you to set up an account or require a human user to enter a special code. Engines in this category are added to the Guided Submissions section of the URLs/Engines tab along with directories. You will have to submit your web pages to these engines manually.

Submitting to directories is different than submitting to search engines and should be approached with care. Normally you will only submit to a directory based search engine once. Therefore, there's not much point in trying to automate this process. In addition, it's important that you browse the directory site first to find the best categories in which to position yourself.
